​​Recap: Writing Retreat 2026

From September 21 to 25, 2026, nineteen JuWis came together in Reichenau an der Rax for the 9th ÖGP Writing Retreat. Surrounded by the beautiful mountain scenery, they spent five days away from their usual workplaces and everyday distractions, focusing on papers, dissertations, and other writing projects. At the same time, the retreat offered many opportunities to exchange ideas, connect with fellow researchers, and enjoy time together.

 

Most of each day was dedicated to individual writing. Everyone arrived with their own project and personal goals, ranging from developing initial ideas and structuring manuscripts to revising papers. Writing alongside others created a motivating and supportive atmosphere that made it easier to stay focused. Regular breaks provided opportunities to talk through challenges, share experiences, and celebrate both small and large steps forward.

 

The evening Lightning Talks were a great opportunity to find out what everyone else was working on. In short presentations, the JuWis introduced their research topics, current projects, and open questions. The talks offered insights into the work of others and led to many interesting conversations throughout the retreat.

 

Of course, the week was not only about writing. A group of JuWis went on a hike to the Speckbacherhütte. In the evening, JuWis organized their own outdoor sports sessions, relaxed in the sauna, or came together for game nights. Even short writing breaks had something special to offer: the goats, pigs, chickens, and geese on the hotel grounds were always worth a visit. Shared meals, coffee breaks, and informal conversations rounded off the program and provided plenty of opportunities to get to know one another. 

 

By the end of the retreat, many pages had been written, ideas discussed, and projects moved forward. The JuWis left Reichenau with new connections, good memories, and fresh motivation to keep writing. 

 

The next ÖGP Writing Retreat (or Summer School) is already something to look forward to. Hopefully, many familiar and new faces will be there - ready to write, connect, and have a great time together!
